Class 2
9/12/24
The second class, we introduced our selves to our mentors (hi guys!). Afterwards we continues to discuss and plan within our group. In the meantime between classes we had met and discussed more of where we wanted to take our project and had deviated a bit from the original idea.

We kept the skittles, but changed the transformative aspect of the ad to be more driven by story and color. The idea of using the skittle to bring color to ones life is the primary story we wanted to tell; and what a better way to demonstrate this than with an artist!
Our story would start out with an artist frustrated, working, tired from working on a black and white art piece, devoid of color. He looks to his color pallet and sees a singular red skittle. To help with this change and flow of color, we have also created a Pinterest.
The artist then picks it up and puts it in the center of the painting. It brings color and life not only to the painting but to the artists world. Additionally having a kind of ripple effect is the idea for color. The fx artists, (Kulin and Eva) on my team worked together to make the ripple effect so far in Houdini, meaning it is fully procedural and any image can be put on the canvas allowing for more flexibility in the ideation process.

Storyboard Artist: Lin Lin

We have also worked more on the storyboards specifically their framing to prepare for shooting this week! I am going to be DP on set, so I have begun making the lighting charts, setting up all equipment, needed for the shoot.

Hi I'm Sydney Relkin and this is my SCAD x The Mill NY Blog!
I'm a undergrad student studying for my BFA in Visual Effects at Savannah College of Art and Design. This blog is dedicated to SANM 560 Collaborative Experiences in the School of Animation and Motion. As students, we are given mentorship from professionals at The Mill NY to make a project with their guidance.

The first class we were given our teams, I am on team KESS with the talented Kulin Mehta, Eva Chan and Saw Htoo. We immediately got acquainted with another and started coming up with ideas for this project.

We agreed on doing bright colored candy, either skittles or nerds.. (as of right how we have agreed on skittles) and started throwing ideas around. We started with an idea of a flower blooming, but wanted to push the storytelling aspect, and pivoted to a different kind of transformation.. which led to the idea of fireworks being a main component to our concept. Once we settled on fireworks we started to storyboard to flesh out the kind of story we wanted to tell. I started to research past concepts that have been done for skittles marketing as inspiration and came across this panel
Which includes the idea of movement that we have started to go for. I did a very rough storyboard to try to conceptualize the first part of a firework and how we could bring a story into play.
Eva then took the idea I had tried to roughly idealize and pushed it to something more readable that had a story aspect. The first thing we all thought of with the idea of skittles and fireworks was the joy that connects both conceptually.
To push the story more to give it depth, we liked the pacing of this add, when pigs fly as a jumping off point to increase the stakes by adding a mechanical component.
Kulin brought up an idea of making a cannon to not only combine live action, but the idea of fireworks and skittles together.
